Our Flight School
We are located at the historic Santa Paula Airport (SZP) in Santa Paula, California. CP Aviation is renowned the world over for its friendly atmosphere and quality instruction. In February 2005, we added a second flight school location at nearby Oxnard airport, after the runway at Santa Paula was destroyed by flooding caused by winter storms. We operated two flight schools, one in Santa Paula and one in Oxnard, for over two years. With the completion of repairs to the runway at Santa Paula, we recently closed our Oxnard location, moving all of our instructors, aircraft and staff back home to Santa Paula. One of the advantages of flight training at Santa Paula is our clear skies, which are seldom troubled for long by the intrusion of the local marine layer. 2007 marked our twentieth anniversary as CP Aviation, but A steady stream of student pilots has been passing through our doors since the 1930's!

Our Instructors
Our Flight School has several specially trained pilots, designated as Certified Flight Instructors by the Federal Aviation Administration. They are available throughout the week to fit your training schedule.

Our experienced instructors have a variety of specialized teaching skills, offering primary, instrument, and commercial instruction, training for aspiring flight instructors, tailwheel and aerobatic training seven days a week, from 8 am until dusk.

CP Aviation's instructors have accumulated many thousands of hours of flight experience. They are noted for the sincere and individual attention they give each and every student, from primary training through advanced!

Aircraft
Our flight line includes four Cessna 150's, a Cessna 152, five Cessna 172's (one of them is a 2004 172 SP), two Citabrias, a Decathlon, and a Super Decathlon Check our Aircraft Rates.

Cessna Pilot Center
As a Cessna Pilot Center, we offer complete training packages of educational materials for primary training, instrument training, and commercial training.

Our Private Pilot Training kit "Cleared for Takeoff"
CPC logo includes a training syllabus, Cleared for Takeoff flight training manual, pilot's operating handbook, the Private Pilot Practical Test Standards, Pilot Logbook, and a Flight Computer. The best part of the kit is the set of CD-ROMs, which make your "ground school" training more interactive.
The lessons have been put together by the best aviation educators especially for use by Cessna Pilot Centers' students. This well structured training system makes it easy for both students and instructors to evaluate progress in flight training. Come by and ask for a demo.

Our friendly office staff and our line personnel are here to assist pilots and visitors. Classrooms, pilot supplies and refreshments are available to our visitors.

In addition, we carry a quality selection of other items you need for your flight training, including ...
  • Pilot operating handbooks
  • Headsets
  • Sectionals, Terminal Area and WAC charts
  • Pilot Guides
  • Airport Facilities Directories
  • FAR-AIMs
  • Aircraft checklists
  • Flight computers
  • Plotters

  • and much more!

We also offer aviation-related gift items including apparel, books, models, toys, Aviation Legends calendars, coffee mugs, Christmas ornaments, a variety of aviation books, newspapers and magazines, airplane wine glass charms, Aviation Museum of Santa Paula postcards and more! Our gift certificates are also very popular with local pilots.

Emergency Maneuver Training (EMT) and Aerobatic Training On any given day, the skies above the fertile Santa Clara Valley, 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, vibrate with the sounds of airplanes looping, rolling, and spinning through the California sunshine. Much of this activity originates from CP Aviation, Inc. Blending in with the historic charm of the airport, CP Aviation's friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere masks the scope of its international reputation for Emergency Maneuver and Aerobatic Training Programs.

CP Aviation is also the home of Master Instructor Rich Stowell. Recently designated the country's first Master CFI-Aerobatic by the National Association of Flight Instructors, Stowell's schedule often books well in advance. In addition, Rich has written two aviation textbooks and hosted four aviation videos. He frequently conducts safety seminars and on-site training clinics across the U.S. With over 18,500 spins logged, Stowell was lead scriptwriter for the FAA's "Avoiding Spins" video. He is currently the lead scriptwriter on the FAA's next video project, "Avoiding Airplane Upsets." Rich was named the FAA's 2006 CFI of the Year. This year he released his latest book "The Light Airplane Pilots Guide to Stall Spin Awareness." Rich
Pilots from all over the U.S., Japan, and Europe make pilgrimages to Santa Paula not only to enroll in the EMT© Program, or to experience the airport's unique environment, but also to take tailwheel transition and primary flight training. About half of CP Aviation's flight instructors are also qualified to teach the EMT course.

Aircraft Maintenance
CP Aviation
also performs aircraft maintenance. Although our mechanics work on a wide variety of aircraft, the maintenance shop specializes in Cessna 180's and 185's, Citabrias, and Decathlons.

A Family Affair
The whole operation
is a family affair: Owner and IA Clay Phelps--the "CP" in CP Aviation--runs the maintenance shop; wife Judy manages the flight school, and teaches primary students and the EMT course.

The school's lineage actually goes a long way back. The main hangar and small office building, for example, are the original structures on Santa Paula Airport. Clay's father, Bob Phelps, operated a flight school from these same walls in the 1930's.

Whether you're looking for top-notch primary flight training, spin, emergency maneuver, or aerobatic training--or any other kind of flight training for that matter--stop by CP Aviation, located next to Logsdon's Restaurant on Santa Paula Airport, just off the 126 freeway in Santa Paula.
